Nursing Curriculum

You are teaching a 3-hour course in the nursing program you established in Project One. Your goal is to create a mind map that will show alignment of learning activities performed in that course to student learning outcomes for the particular course. Use of the words outcomes and objectives can be confusing and different nurse educators will use different terms. Objectives come from older behaviorist theory while outcomes come from the younger outcome focus. Nursing programs across the country will use different terms. What is essential is that the programs use the terms consistently. For simplicity, in this course we will use 1) program outcomes 2) course outcomes and 3) student learning outcomes for the class or module. A course map is a visual representation of your course. You may also know it as curriculum alignment or an assessment audit. It allows you to evaluate the meaningful components of your course and align your objectives/outcomes with course activities. After completing a course map, you can target meaningful changes and set the direction for your course in an effort to increase student learning.
