consult appropriate scholarly resources, which
may include: journal articles, academic books, respected reviews (newspapers and
journals), or writings by the author on the text. You may choose to begin your research by
consulting some of the sources cited in the CACW104 lectures (reference lists are
included at the end of most lectures), but DO NOT reference the CACW104 lecture slides
themselves: undertake independent research. use Wikipedia/
Sparknotes or similar sites as resources.
essay must contain an account of the historical/cultural circumstances of the text,
using scholarly research to support this, and provide close textual analysis of the formal
properties of the text. Formal properties may include: the structure, voice, order of events/
information, genre, etc. You must provide direct evidence from the text and scholarly
resources to support your claims. Quotations from creative and critical texts are included in
your word count.
Your response must be in essay form, comprising:
- A brief introduction that outlines the issues you will examine, and asserts an argument
- - Paragraphs with quoted evidence from the text that support your claims, and analysis
of that evidence
- A conclusion that confirms your argument
THE QUESTION TO ANSWER IS:
Many of the texts studied in CACW104 engaged with the roles experienced by
different genders in society. Choose ONE case study from the subject (one text, or,
in the case of poetry and short stories, several texts by the same writer). Research
the expected/changing gender roles in the text’s episteme, as well as other critics’
responses to the text. How does the work reflect the gender roles of the time in
which it was produced? You should not limit your analysis to the content of the
texts, but also focus on the formal properties of the writing.
And the text I have studied and want you to write about is the narrative OLIVER TWIST by
CHARLES DICKENS. don't forget to include quotes for evidence.
