Oral Critique

Oral Critique Order Description The focus of this task is to unpack these layers and networks of meaning by analysing the formal construction of the video (Please ONLY use the YouTube link provided here: ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMUwA7ekIgc ) The following guide provides you a step-by-step instruction of exactly what you need to do: 1. You should start your analysis by naming the video, its creator(s) and context. Although your oral should be informed by some additional research, DO NOT include unnecessary and overly detailed biographical or background information. 2. Instead, focus your analysis on the ‘evidence’ found IN the video. Your Oral Critique should focus strictly on what we see and hear in the video. A useful technique is to imagine that you have never seen a video or moving image work before. This should allow you to identify and describe even the most obvious content and formal elements in the video that may be important in constructing meaning. 3. Formal elements that you may choose to discuss include: editing, duration of shots, speed, pace, rhythm, transitions, continuity, discontinuity, framing (close-ups, mid-shots, long-shots), internal compositions, camera angles, camera movement, special effects, green screens, text, animated graphics, point-of-view, lighting, colour, image quality, movement, choreography, staging, sets, scenes, location, characters, acting, makeup, props, costuming, action, dialogue, music and sound. You will not be able to describe all of these in the time allotted, so you must determine which formal elements are the most crucial for the video’s construction of meaning. This is an important aspect of this task. 4. You are encouraged to build your analysis by beginning with these simple descriptions in order to then generate more complex conclusions. That is, you should use your descriptions of the video’s content and formal elements to analyse and explain how the work communicates meaning (whether explicit, implicit, atmospheric, symbolic, metaphoric, narrative, literal, etc.). 5. In this next step (analysis), you should draw connections between the key content and formal elements, and discuss why certain formal devices have been used. You should explain which formal elements play important roles in the reception or viewing of the video, and how they operate through literal, metaphoric, ambient, atmospheric, sensory, emotional or intellectual means to construct meaning. By following these steps, you should analyse and articulate how the formal construction of the video contributes to how the video communicates meaning.
