Packaging Design Briefs are initiated by the marketing group and forwarded to the Package Engineering group

Assume you are the packaging engineer for a large consumer products company. In this company, the Packaging Design Briefs are initiated by the marketing group and forwarded to the Package Engineering group. You currently are working on three packaging design briefs. Copies of these design briefs are attached. Note that the marketing department has completed some information on each brief and the Package Engineering department will complete the remaining information.

  1. Choose one brief and complete the information on the brief. Complete the information needed on the design brief. Please include justification of your responses when requested. You are making judgment calls based on the information that you have been given and also based on what we have learned in the class. :
  2. Complete a Power Point Presentation. The Power Point presentation should reflect the outcome of completing the design brief as well as other aspects you deem necessary in presenting, you need to have at least 10 slides, to include an introduction slide and a reference.

Full Answer Section

  • Justification of Choices: Explain the rationale behind the key packaging engineering decisions, referencing factors like product protection, cost-effectiveness, sustainability, manufacturing feasibility, regulatory compliance, and consumer experience.
  • Proposed Packaging Design (Visual Concept): Include a visual representation of the proposed packaging. This could be a sketch, a mock-up image, or a description of the intended design.
  • Manufacturing and Filling Considerations: Briefly discuss how the proposed packaging would be manufactured and filled efficiently.
  • Testing Requirements: Outline the necessary testing procedures to ensure the packaging's integrity and ability to protect the product throughout the supply chain (e.g., drop tests, compression tests, environmental testing).
  • Sustainability Considerations: Discuss how the chosen packaging materials and design address sustainability goals.
  • Conclusion: Summarize the proposed packaging solution and its alignment with the design brief objectives.
  • References: List any sources or materials consulted.

Sample Answer

  • Choose one brief that seems most interesting or presents the most relevant packaging engineering challenges.
  • Complete the remaining information on the chosen design brief. This will involve making informed decisions based on the provided details, general packaging engineering principles, and concepts we've discussed in class. I will include justifications for my choices where requested, explaining the reasoning behind my material selections, structural designs, testing considerations, and other relevant factors.
  • Create a PowerPoint presentation (minimum 10 slides) that will cover:
    • Introduction: Briefly introduce the product, the design brief, and the objectives of the packaging project.
    • Design Brief Summary: Highlight the key information provided by the marketing department.
    • Package Engineering Decisions: Detail the information I have completed on the brief, including material choices, dimensions, closure systems, labeling considerations, and any specific design features.
