Plato on Democracy
Plato on Democracy
Order Description
Discuss Plato on democracy. Most of us would agree with Plato that tyranny is the worst form of government, and that rule by the wealthy or by a military elite is less
than ideal. However, few of us would agree with Plato's comparative assessment of rule by philosophers versus majority rule.
Why does Plato think that rule by philosophers is preferable to rule by the majority? What are the advantages of the former (rule by philosophers) according to Plato?
What are the disadvantages of the latter (rule by the majority) according to Plato? Do you agree? If so, why? If not, why not?
Instead of treating the essay like a list of short answer questions, my professor would like it to be a brief, integrated essay on the topic, but also touching base on
all of the issues those sub-questions raise.
We have only read Republic by Plato in my class, so I assume that is the only source allowed for this essay.
Plato's view that tyranny is horrible, not sure about whether I agree with him or not on his comparative assessment, because I don't really understand it. :( If you
understand what it means, please by all means, include whether or not you agree with it and why, so I can hopefully understand a little better.
