PrEPing RNs: The Chain Reaction of HIV Education
The purpose of this evidence based research is to link nursing education and awareness to enhanced understanding of the HIV prevention medication, for short, PrEP. PrEP or pre-exposure prophylaxis is a once daily oral medication. Therefore, the paper needs: 1. outline the importance of nursing knowledge on public health issues as they are the most trusted profession and hence, communication of information from the nursing profession is valued. 2. The lack of knowledge of PrEP by the general population 3. The evidence based intervention- 45 minute lecture to nurses outlining PrEP, indications, targeted candidates, side effects, and "need to knows" for the nurses. 4. Results- please see attached excel- there is a lack of knowledge of PrEP pre-intervention and the knowledge jumps post-intervention. Sexual health history assessment skills also improved post intervention. Please see prior comments for additional information on results. Ultimately, the paper serves to underscore the importance of nursing awareness of topics/public health in order to spread awareness to the patient population; which in this case, will spread awareness of PrEP, decreased HIV transmission, and ultimately, healthier communities. The PowerPoint utilized for the intervention/ education is attached for additional understanding. Thank you for attention to the overall focus of the intervention- HIV prevention through the nursing profession as other preventative including transitional preventive methods have not proven foolproof as the number of HIV transmissions per year in the U.S. remains open for much improvement.
Please see the attached files- the excel demonstrates the results of the intervention (PrEP education on RNs). The evidence based intervention serves to link nursing knowledge to optimal public health outcomes. Please see attached powerpoint for enhanced understanding.
