Principles of Behavior Analysis

1. State and define the two types of Motivating Operations.
2. Provide 2 examples to illustrate each type of Motivating Operation (MO). Note: you should submit 4 examples in total.
3. When you explain your examples, be sure to specify the two effects of the motivating operation in the example with respect to (1) the value of the consequence and (2) the frequency of the associated behaviors.
4. You must include at least one image (graph, flowchart, etc.) to visually support your examples.
5. Label each part of your image (i.e., the MOs, the Sds, the behaviors, the consequences, etc.).

Effect 2 (Frequency of Behavior): The frequency of behaviors associated with getting water is increased. You are more likely to ask for water, look for a fountain, or buy a bottle of water.

Example 2: Hunger

Motivating Operation (EO): Not eating for an entire day. This establishes the value of food as a reinforcer.

Effect 1 (Value of Consequence): The value of food as a consequence (a reinforcer) is increased. Food is now a highly desirable outcome.

Effect 2 (Frequency of Behavior): The frequency of behaviors associated with getting food is increased. You are more likely to cook, order takeout, or go grocery shopping.

2. Examples of Abolishing Operations (AO) 📉

Example 1: Satiety

Motivating Operation (AO): Eating a large, satisfying meal. This abolishes the value of food as a reinforcer.

Effect 1 (Value of Consequence): The value of food as a consequence (a reinforcer) is decreased. You are full and don't want to eat anymore.

Effect 2 (Frequency of Behavior): The frequency of behaviors associated with getting food is decreased. You are less likely to accept an offer for dessert or order another dish.

Example 2: A/C on a Hot Day

Motivating Operation (AO): Being in a room with the air conditioning on full blast. This abolishes the value of coolness as a reinforcer.

Effect 1 (Value of Consequence): The value of a cold consequence (the coolness of the air) is decreased. You are already comfortable.

Effect 2 (Frequency of Behavior): The frequency of behaviors associated with getting cool is decreased. You are less likely to complain about the heat or open a window for a breeze.

The two types of Motivating Operations (MOs) are the Establishing Operation (EO) and the Abolishing Operation (AO). An Establishing Operation increases the effectiveness of a reinforcer, making a person more likely to engage in behaviors that lead to that reinforcer. An Abolishing Operation decreases the effectiveness of a reinforcer, making a person less likely to engage in behaviors that lead to it.

1. Examples of Establishing Operations (EO) 📈

Example 1: Thirst

Motivating Operation (EO): Not drinking water for several hours. This establishes the value of water as a reinforcer.

Effect 1 (Value of Consequence): The value of water as a consequence (a reinforcer) is increased. You are now very thirsty.
