For this essay you will choose a person or place and write a profile of your subject. You may be humorous, serious, or a combination of both. Outside of college you may need to write a profile for a variety of reasons including newsletters, human resources requirements, elegies, eulogies, obituaries, recommendation letters, legal documents, etc. Therefore you may choose to write a “regular” analysis essay whereby you analyze a person or place via a basic essay format—OR—you may choose to use a different format such as an elegy (eulogy works too) or obituary. You could also do some role playing and pretend to write a profile of an employee for a company news letter or retirement announcement. If you are interested in the current political scene you could write an op/ed profiling one of the candidates (local or national level)—or if politics aren’t interesting you could profile a celebrity. Another option is to profile a type of person, but be careful here. We are not setting out to negatively profile any group of people. For instance, you can’t write a profile making fun of a group of people based on disability or skin color, or mental abilities. You can profile a group of people based on a common interest or habit. For example, you could write a profile of different types of moms or different kinds of sports enthusiasts, or different kinds of “foodies”. These profiles of different kinds of people who share a common interest can be funny and fun to write. An example might be to profile the different people at your job. As long as you are being fair with your descriptions and not unkind you can do a lot with this type of profile.
