Scenario 1
Your friend (55 yrs) is seeking your advice after being quite isolated over the past few months and diagnosed with depression. Their psychologist has encouraged them to consider getting back into an exercise routine to help with their overall wellbeing and expand their social connections. While on Facebook they came across a local ‘parkrun’ page which sounds like an interesting activity for a Saturday morning. They also saw an advert for a local gym, advertising group spin (indoor cycling) classes. Before they decide, they’ve reached out to you to find out which program is likely to be better at helping improve their mood and manage their depression symptoms.
Part 1
In this part you will start by identifying a relevant research question relevant to your chosen scenario. You will also need to justify the research paradigm that is best suited to answer this question.
In the template answer:
- Your research question
- Which paradigm (type of research) does this question suit? Justify your choice in 2-3 sentences.
Part 2
In this part of the task you will begin by operationalise your search terms using PICO/PICOT and appropriate databases and limiters.
In the template: - Complete the 'Key Terms' column of the table to operationalise the relevant search terms for your research question and scenario. You must have at least two key word alternatives for each relevant section of the framework. Key Terms Example
Participants Adults with depression
Intervention/
Exposure Chocolates
Comparator Exercise
Outcome Mood
Time Short term - Identify four databases that you will use to search for studies. Note: for this task Google Scholar is not considered a database.
- List four relevant limiters that can help to refine your search.
Part 3
Now you are ready to search the literature. Using two databases you have identified in Part 2 and relevant combinations of your key words and limiters you'll create a search string. The results of this search should align to your scenario and help you to find an answer to your research question.
In the template:
- Complete the table in the template to present three relevant papers, using at least two databases (identified in Part 2). The journal articles found in your search should help you to answer the research question from your chosen scenario.
In the table ensure you add the author details (using Harvard UniSA in text format), the database, search string and limiters used, and the DOI of the paper. Note: If there is no DOI on an article, please insert the URL instead.
