De Chesnay and Anderson write that resilience is the ability of individuals to bounce back or to cope successfully despite adverse circumstances (2016.) In the Documentary Tent City we see
resilience of those whom are residing in the tents, these residents all having different reasons for their situation, all have had to make do with the resources available to them (Brazhnikov.2014.)
A great example of resilience is the young store clerk who despite working full time is unable to afford better accommodations, so in light of his situation, he continues to work and save his money
and spends his free time educating himself.
The fight for social justice is seen in Tent City with the work of the STEPS program. Michael McNeil is working to obtain subsidized houses after the residents of Tent City have already been
"failed by society" (Brazhnikov.2014.)
One of the main goals of Healthy People 2020 is create healthy social and physical environments (Savage, Kub, & Groves. 2016). The need for this goal is clearly reflected in the documentary just
based on the fact that there is homelessness and a need for "tented" communities. The BSN prepared nursing, including those working in public health, can help with this issue in an upstream
approach if we advocate for safe and affordable housing within our communities. We can also help by directing the vulnerable population towards agencies that may be able to help them avoid these
situations, although as documented, sometimes the people are still failed by the system.
Milo discusses s the range of choices available that could shape the health of a society (Butterfield.1990.) Milo believed that the health of population was the result of available resources
(whether abundant or lacking); that behavioral patterns are a result of limited choices (whether real or perceived) and that organizational behavior sets the range of available resources
(Butterfield.1990.) We as nurses are given the opportunity to play a very important role in changing society and the health disparities that are present, by changing our thought process and looking
upstream great changes can be made.
