QUALITATIVE DATA CODING

  1. You are going to conduct an analysis of an interview. Read the transcript once without coding to get a full sense of what is included.
  2. Decide how you will code this transcript. Will you code each sentence, each response, everything, only what is informative, or each “thought” or “idea”? (5 pts for identifying the method to code)
Why did you decide to use this method? (10 pts) (5 pts for insightfulness and thoughtfulness)
  3. Begin your coding. Using the method you identified in number 2, you will look for themes in the conversation and assign a code to each theme. For example, you might notice the theme of “loss and death” and decide one of your codes is “Death”. Code the transcript by marking or highlighting the text that reflects each theme you see using the method you identified in number 2 with the code you have decided to use. Remember that a code is label for the theme you are seeing. (15 pts for coding the transcript, 5 pts for using the method identified in #2)
Note. There is no one right way to do this exercise. As mentioned, coding is an iterative process. Meaning, your codes will change as you proceed. You may decide that two codes can be combined into one. Or, you may realize that one code needs to be broken into two codes. It is okay to change strategies as you work. At the end of this step, your transcript will be all marked up when you are done!
  4. Identify your Codebook. Write each of your codes and provide a definition for each code (define the themes you noticed). (10 pts for identifying the codes and definitions, 5 pts for insightfulness and thoughtfulness)
  5. From these themes, choose two main themes and find a quotation for each of those 2 themes. Write (or type) the quotation for each of the 2 themes below. (The most important may not be the most frequently mentioned.) Discuss why you choose these 2 themes. (5 pts for providing a quote for the two themes, 10 pts for discussing why the two themes were chosen, 5 pts for insightfulness and thoughtfulness)
  6. Finally, write a paragraph or two about your experience as you coded. What did you see or learn from this exercise? (10 pts) How was it different than you expected? (10 pts) (5 pts for insightfulness and thoughtfulness)
