Criteria for Selection of Quality Literature for Young Children.pdf

Fantasy vs Reality.pdf

You have been given a lot of information about selecting quality children's literature. You have considered fantasy vs. reality, watched a video on culturally responsive children's literature, and read about supporting social moral development and personality development. It's time to put it all together!

  1. Write 1-2 paragraphs summarizing your learning. Be sure to draw in ideas from the two documents in this discussion, the videos in this module, and the reading about supporting social/moral development and personality development. If it helps to frame this 1-2 paragraphs as a note to parents explaining your philosophy of children's literature, then do it! If you want to just bullet main ideas and add some content to each bullet, do that too! Just get down the main ideas in your own words!
  2. Search (Amazon, and Noble, etc) for two books that you believe would meet the criteria you have written about in the first part of this discussion. State why you believe the books you have selected are appropriate, what age group you would read them to, what content the book delivers, and how would use the book, (ie, small group setting, large group setting, individually, send home with family, etc)
  3. And finally, what do you make of the Fantasy vs. Reality statement? Do you agree, disagree? Why or why not, and what evidence from developmental theory can you cite to back up your answer? (ie, Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development, Vygotsky and social learning theory, etc)
