Rene Descartes
-Who was Rene Descartes? Tell me when and where he lived, what he did for a living, what were some of his
major contributions, and what was his purpose in writing "Meditations on First Philosophy"? What was he trying
to do? (Do NOT plagiarize Descartes' biography.) You may find information about Descartes here:

-Describe Descartes' process, his "Methodological Skepticism" and explain how Descartes' take on knowledge
is Foundationalist in nature?
-In Meditation I, Descartes discusses three arguments that cast doubt on one of his Foundational beliefs: the
Deception Argument, the Dream Argument, and the Evil Demon Argument. Present and Explain the Deception
Argument by writing it down EXACTLY as it occurs here in the Document entitled "Descartes' Skeptical
Arguments", and then proceed by explaining in detail each of Descartes' premises. Use the examples he
provides to show that sometimes our senses deceive us. Make sure that you get the conclusion right.
-Finally, Blackburn has a penetrating critique of Descartes' Deception Argument in his chapter on Knowledge.
Evaluate the Deception Argument in light of Blackburn's criticism. Why does Blackburn think that Descartes'
argument is not very good?
