They are meant to be prompts of what you should be looking for within the film, you can revisit the questions in your text book on page 192] How much cutting is there and why? Are the shots highly fragmented or relatively lengthy? What is the point of the cutting in each scene? To clarify? To stimulate? To Lyricize? To create suspense? To explore an idea or emotion in depth? Does the cutting seem manipulative or are we left to interpret the images on our own? What kind of rhythm does the editing establish with each scene? Is the personality of the filmmaker apparent in the cutting or is the presentation of shots relatively objective and functional? Is editing a major language system of the movie or does the film artist relegate cutting to a relatively minor function? Obviously within a one page essay you cannot cover all of those items, you should have looked for patterns, reoccurring themes, etc., while watching the film and that will guide you on how you will approach the essay and which questions you might utilize to explore. Treat your essay as you would a paper, come up with a thesis statement (something that you observed and would like to prove) for your first paragraph, each additional paragraph should be evidence from the film of why you came to you came to your conclusions. If you have a need to use names, always use the character's names in the film (not the actor's names), if there is a need to mention the director or editor more than once the first time it will be the first name, after that just the last name will do. If you use the title of the film, please italicize it or place quotation marks around it.
