chose EJI because of their profound impact on challenging systemic racism within the American legal system. Their work is both impactful and necessary. Bryan Stevenson, the founder, is a powerful advocate for justice, and their work combines legal advocacy with historical education, which gives a rounded approach to social justice. The organization’s work of educating the public on the history of racial injustice is also incredibly important for creating a more equitable society. I am particularly impressed by their work in advocating for those on death row, and their work to provide legal aid to people who otherwise would not have access to it.
What is their mission?
EJI's mission is to end mass incarceration and excessive punishment, to challenge racial and economic injustice, and to protect basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in 1 American society.

Briefly describe the history of the organization. In other words, why was this organization created?
EJI was founded in 1989 by Bryan Stevenson, a public interest lawyer. He began his work representing indigent defendants in Alabama and witnessed firsthand the systemic injustices within the criminal justice system. He recognized the urgent need for an organization dedicated to providing legal representation to those who had been wrongly convicted, unfairly sentenced, or denied access to fair legal processes, especially those impacted by racial bias. The organization was created to actively combat the legacy of racial inequality in the United States, particularly within the legal and penal systems.
Describe research that they are working on and/or current projects/programs that they have? Briefly describe 1-2 of these?
EJI engages in extensive research and advocacy, including:
Community Remembrance Project:
This project focuses on documenting the history of racial terror lynchings in America. EJI has installed historical markers at lynching sites and collected soil from these locations to create a national memorial. This project aims to promote truth-telling and reconciliation by acknowledging the historical trauma caused by racial violence.
Legal Representation and Advocacy:
EJI provides legal representation to people on death row, those who have been wrongly convicted, and children sentenced to life imprisonment. They also engage in policy advocacy to reform the criminal justice system, working to end excessive sentencing, challenge unfair practices, and promote racial justice. They work to bring legal aid to those who would otherwise have no access to it.
