Social Welfare and Economic Policy

To be effective as a human service professional and agent of change, it is essential to clearly understand multiculturalism and diversity in a global environment as it relates to the needs of the populations you wish to serve, social welfare policies, as well as programs that currently exist to meet those needs. In this assignment, you will take a detailed look at one of the populations served by members of the human service profession, identify a current social policy at the local, state, and/or federal level that impacts clients served, describe a policy or policies that attempt to meet the needs of this group, and discuss methods to advocate for change.
Assignment Directions
For this assignment, you will write a 3- to 5-page expository essay. Begin by selecting one of the populations described in Chapter 2 of your text and conducting research to expand on the material covered in the text. Use the PG Library and the internet to research policies that already exist to help meet the needs of members of the selected group.
Please address each of the following:
• Provide a detailed descriiption of the unique needs of the population selected.
• Identify a social welfare or economic policy at the local, state, or federal level.
o What services does the policy provide in order to help the identified population?
o How does this policy inform the human service profession?
• Do you believe the policy adequately serves this population? Why or why not? If not, briefly discuss how you would advocate for change. Be sure to support your opinion with research.
• Discuss the impact that prejudice and discrimination have had on members of this group and the value of multiculturalism and diversity in a global environment. Please be detailed in your response.
