Sociology of Aging

Question 1:
Why is it so important to take an intersectional lens to understand the aging process and lived experiences of aging? How can an intersectional lens that takes into account racial ethnic inequalities, gender inequities, and class differences help us understand economic security (or lack thereof) during older age?
Question 2:
There are many challenges associated with caregiving for aging parents and other older adult family members. There’s the psychological aspect and “rolereversal” (when the child takes on the caregiving or traditionally “parent” role responsibilities); there’s the financial burden and the tension between maintaining paid work and caregiving, amongst other issues.
What aspect of caregiving do you think is most challenging and why? And, in contrast, what aspect of caregiving do you think is most rewarding or positive, and why? Why is caregiving so incredibly important and yet so undervalued?
