Substance abuse & health

Health, Society & Culture : 2016 Assessment 3 Initial Notes – TOPIC Ideas Assessment 3 involves you choosing a health topic of interest to you, providing a comprehensive analysis of the issue and exploring the implications for practice. This is to be organised as a powerpoint (pp) presentation – or equivalent document - of approximately 15 minutes and comprising of no more than 1500 words. See also the briefing notes and the marking grid for more information and to be discussed in Week 9 lecture. Possible Topics Topic ideas which can be used for Assessment 3: 1. Obesity, body image & health 2. Mental illness, recovery and stigma 3. Mental health systems of care 4. Chronic illness – one of these - diabetes, heart disease, cancer, renal failure etc 5. Substance abuse & health (I’m interested in this topic) 6. Poverty, wealth & health 7. HIV/AIDS & health 8. Violence – choose one focus - eg domestic violence, detention of refugees, child abuse & bullying in schools - & health 9. Workplace safety & health – eg police workforce and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; Returned soldiers and suicide 10. Or choose a population group – women, youth, older people etc - & health Or negotiate a topic of interest to you with your tutor. Some of the topics can be broken down further eg for 1. You might focus on obesity and body image might be a small or big part of that focus. OR: You might focus on body image where obesity might be a small or large part of that focus. Then you might narrow it to males, young males, young gay and trans males and body image and so on. Similarly for number 2. This is such a big topic and there are many ways to focus it for your assessment. Do check with your tutor to make sure the focus “works” eg there is enough material to research it well, the focus fits with the course themes and that it is feasible ie not too big and complex. Presentation Preparation & Document Due Date Your pp document – or equivalent document - is what is assessed. You can prepare a powerpoint document; a prezi document; a mindmap document – as per mindnode.com; a media release; or other document – please discuss with your tutor. This material might be used to do a ‘stand up in front of class’ or ‘sit down in small group’ presentation between weeks 11 to 13 and needs to be submitted on Blackboard by the end of the week in which you present or otherwise nominate to submit (See booking form). The copy of your pp notes – or equivalent - are the only material tutors will have to assess your work. So make sure they are comprehensive enough and address the marking criteria as this is what we will be basing the marking on. There are no marks for the actual presentation but there are marks for the quality of your materials. But please don’t write massive amounts and aim to have what would be close to possible to present in the time of 15 minutes. This must not exceed 15000 words. Over-length/time assessment pieces will not be considered fully in the awarding of marks. A second briefing note will follow for how to lay out the pp slides and address the marking criteria.
