An old adage says, there are two things certain in life: death and taxes. Ironically, there is a tax on death as well as many other elements in our everyday lives. Throughout all history, taxes have been the causes of wars, rebellion and even riots. At the state level, legislators have decided which items will be taxed as well as the rates that will be applied to property, income and sales taxes per state. On the other hand, all levels of government need taxes to provide services to its citizens and it is an element in our society that has been debated no matter what political party holds power.
TASK: You have been recently elected State Senator for the great state of New Jersey of your congressional district. You ran on the campaign slogan: “THE ONLY NEW TAXES WILL BE LOWER ONES!”. Now it is time to live up to this slogan as your constituents (supporters) are eagerly awaiting how you will lower their already heavy property tax burden. Explain in detail what reform measures and the action you will take to lower their property tax bills. Keep in mind where the majority of tax money goes as well as the impact your tax cuts will have upon the community.--Good Luck.
