In this paper, we will discuss each of the AACN Essentials and describe how they were met during my nursing program. We will incorporate evidence from previous Nursing Evolution assignments, as well as examples from didactic, skills lab, and clinical rotations. Essential I: Liberal Education for Baccalaureate Generalist Nursing Practice This essential emphasizes the importance of a broad liberal education foundation for nursing practice. It recognizes that nurses must be able to think critically, communicate effectively, and understand the social, cultural, economic, and political factors that influence health outcomes. During my nursing program, this essential was met through courses such as sociology, psychology, and ethics. These courses provided me with a deeper understanding of human behavior, cultural diversity, and ethical decision-making. For example, in my sociology class, we examined social determinants of health and how they contribute to health disparities. This knowledge allowed me to approach patient care with a holistic perspective, considering not just the physical aspect but also the social and cultural factors that may impact a patient’s health.
