The Coming of Arthur

  1. (a)Chapter I of Malory's The Coming of Arthur ("Of Arthur's Birth and How He Became King") provides biographical information about Arthur's youth that Boorman's film Excalibur either minimizes or ignores. Summarize the differences between the two biographies with a combination of short quotes and paraphrases; then evaluate the artistic merit of the changes.
  2. (b)applies the Print-to-film Matrix to enhance your analysis.
  3. In Boorman's Excalibur, find the scene where Lancelot meets Guinevere for the first time. The scene starts at (57:53), but the first face-to-face contact is at 58:03.
    Analyze this scene closely and explain how this is a McLuhan moment compared to the Malory (printed) text. Then, use McLuhan's ideas to make your case. Finally, add to your analysis by applying the materials from the "Visual Rhetoric" documents and "The Print-to-film Matrix."
  4. Again in Boorman's Excalibur, here's a screenshot (see below) of Morgana encountering Merlin at Arthur's and Guinevere's wedding (01:02:50). Analyze the shot regarding what the positioning of its human elements implies about the relationships between these characters. Use all appropriate course resources in your answer.
  5. At 01:14:10 in Boorman's Excalibur, a naked Sir Lancelot is visited by an armoured Sir Lancelot, and they fight each other (01:14:10). Offer a Jungian reading of this scene. Write a Jungian analysis of this scene.
