The Media’s Portrayal of Race and Crime: A Psychological Perspective
Think back to a media story that is recent (in the past two years) and related to race in the media and/or crime in the news. Find something that is different from the cases in your text. Locate a reference to this issue that you can find online via a news website or newspaper site for example.
In the current times, it should not be difficult to think of a story, but you may want to find something that is not currently in the news or that you are less familiar with than some of the more current situations. So feel free to search for something that grabs your interest. In your first paragraph, describe the story so that you can refresh the memories of your classmates or introduce them to the story. In the next two paragraphs, explain these stories from the perspective of a media psychologist. That is, based on what you have learned this week, how would you explain the media treatment of this story? How did people respond? How did the public’s response affect the perception? While some of your classmates may find the same stories, try to find variety and, if your story has been mentioned before by other students, share something new and different.
