The Old Man and the Sea

Your assignment in this essay is to identify and analyze allegorical elements in The Old Man and the Sea. Pick one or more elements in the novella to
analyze, showing how it/they fit(s) into what you understand to be this work's larger allegory. The elements could be characters, animals, items, places,
anything. You will also need to articulate what you understand the point of the novella's allegory to be (an allegory, again, is a story told on a literal and
figurative level, so you will need to explain what you understand to be the figurative level). You may want to focus on just one element as functioning in the
allegory, or you might want to discuss some or all elements functioning on the figurative level. The essay must be at least five pages, typed, double-spaced,
and submitted as a Word document.
It is imperative that you push below the surface of the text into its deeper dimensions. Allow yourself to play in the language, letting it lead you to startling
insights and realizations.
While this is not a formal paper, this essay does need to have an introduction, body, and conclusion all built around a central thesis. Feel free to be creative in
your approach, but do not forget to follow the rules of grammar and spelling (if you present a sentence fragment as a sentence, make sure it is for truly good
reason). The grade (0-100) will be based on depth of insight, creativity of approach, and effective presentation, including grammar and spelling.

The Old Man and the Sea, published in 1952, is one of Hemingway's later works. The novella won a Pulitzer Prize and struck readers as a heroic allegory of
endurance and the cruelties of life. As you read this book, consider the various elements Hemingway puts into play, whether it is the old man, the boy, the
boat, the sea, the sharks, the marlin, the fishing line, etc.
