write an Opinion Editorial (Op-Ed) addressing a topic chosen by the instructor (800 to 1000 words, double-spaced, Times New Roman, font size 12, 1” margins).
o Write in strong, lively language – but don’t rant.
o Provocative or contrarian viewpoints are more likely to grab editors’/readers’ attention. o Keep sentences and paragraphs short and simple. Editors love punchy copy. So do readers.
o Choose a strong title for your piece
o Weave in relevant facts and statistics to bolster your case but try to avoid using too many of them.
o Anecdotes and examples may help illustrate points and add colour to the piece.
o Steer clear of academic jargon and technical terms; if readers (and newspaper editors) have to figure out what you’re saying, you’ve lost them.
o If you’re focusing on a problem, propose ways to fix it.
o Finish on a note that reinforces your message.
o Aim for a length of 800-1000 words (Even that may be too long for some newspapers).
