The teacher's last statements

Please read the following case study and respond to the questions. Jose, a sixth-grade student, is sitting at his desk in class while his teacher is delivering a math lesson. After finishing the lesson, the teacher then assigns classwork for the class to do at their seats. The teacher sits down at his desk and begins to work on some tasks. Jose tries to tackle to classwork but does not understand what is required of him and does not complete the assignment within the allotted time as he was expected to do. The teacher, while circulating around the class as the end of the class period was approaching, notices that Jose has not made progress on the assignment. The teacher asks Jose, "why aren't you working on this? You should be almost done by now." Jose responds, "I don't understand how to do this," as he points to the worksheet. The teacher sighs loudly with frustration and exclaims so that everyone can hear, "I just explained what you have to do to the whole class, so you clearly weren't listening. You need to pay attention and listen." Please respond to the following questions:

  1. How do you think Jose might interpret the teacher's last statements?
  2. How might you think, feel, and react if you were Jose in this situation?
  3. Why do you think Jose did not ask for help when he was confused?
  4. How could the teacher have responded differently in order to help Jose feel valued and respected?
