Students can begin by briefly telling something about the author’s life, or they may decide to give
a brief summary of the story. The introduction should not be longer than a 5-8 sentence paragraph.
The thesis should be in the introduction. For the sake of clarity, be sure to underline your thesis
for the reader. The thesis will be the main idea of your paper.
Afterwards, begin giving various critics’ views about different sections of the short story. Some
critics will only talk about the characters. Others will talk about theme, symbolism, format, etc.
When you give a critic’s view, you must include an in-text citation, whether it is a direct quote,
paraphrase, or summation. After the critic’s view is given, you need to synthesize. That is, give
your opinion about the critic’s view. You will continue this back and forth method (critic’s
view/your view) throughout the essay. At the end, give your essay a conclusion, by wrapping up
what you talked about in the essay.
