Discuss a theoretical model of cultural competency that is complementary to your nursing philosophy of patient care.
Theoretical model of cultural competency
My nursing philosophy is based on the belief that all patients deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their cultural background. I believe that it is important to understand the patient's cultural beliefs and practices so that I can provide them with the best possible care.
One theoretical model of cultural competency that I find complementary to my nursing philosophy is the Campinha-Bacote Model of Cultural Competence in the Delivery of Healthcare Services. This model identifies six essential components of cultural competence:
- Cultural awareness: This is the ability to recognize and appreciate the patient's cultural beliefs and practices.
- Cultural knowledge: This is the acquisition of information about the patient's culture.
- Cultural skill: This is the ability to interact effectively with patients from different cultures.
- Cultural encounters: This is the opportunity to interact with patients from different cultures.
- Cultural desire: This is the willingness to learn about and interact with patients from different cultures.
- Cultural humility: This is the recognition that one's own culture is not superior to the patient's culture.
