Theory of mind (ToM)

Design an experiment which could determine if non-human animals (e.g., primates) use theory of mind (ToM) to engage in deception. Present this as a mock brief for the IRB (Institutional Review Board). Your brief should summarize your experiment, persuade the IRB that your experiment is ethical (especially if you are using deception), and show that them is greater scientific value than risk in conducting the study. At a minimum you should address:

  • A definition of theory of mind (ToM) & explanation of how you will assess/test ToM. - Who are your participants/subjects and how will you recruit them? - Clear hypothesis/hypotheses. - Summary of how you intend to conduct your experiment (experimental design & procedures). - How will you ensure you are measuring level 4 deception and NOT confusing with levels 1-3? - How will your data lead to an answer to question/hypotheses? - Any risks/benefits associated with the experiment
