Discussion Posting 4 Brief summary of the following article is below http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-23971498 Nurses and midwives in the UK look set to face three-yearly checks from the end of 2015 under proposals being put forward. The Nursing and Midwifery Council wants to see patients, colleagues and employers give feedback on performance. Those deemed not up to scratch face being barred from working, under the plans drawn up by the NMC.A similar system - albeit carried out every five years - was introduced last year for doctors. Currently it is up to nurses to declare themselves fit to practice. This is known as renewal. The proposals - known as revalidation - for the 670,000 nurses and midwives on the UK register have been under discussion for years. Following the uproar over standards of care in the wake of the Stafford Hospital scandal the NMC committed itself to coming up with firm proposals. The paper states that revalidation will promote "greater professionalism" and "improve the quality of care". Is this possible? and how will they measure it? I am interested in your thoughts on this as we move into the area of risk management, human error and consumer partnerships. I base these questions on the fact we don’t have anything like this proposed in Australia as yet. We have a system where health professional declare themselves fit to practice and continue to do so unless they make mistakes they are catastrophic and they in fact get caught! This is about people’s lives alternatively if we look at Aviation, this is about transporting people, if it goes wrong it is catastrophic, it is about people’s lives so the approach is different. They test pilots every 6 months to declare if the airline think they are fit to practice. For wider discussion please……………………… Discussion Posting 5 In spite of differences between aviation and health care, the similarities are more striking. Both are intrinsically hazardous endeavors, with complex technology, and dominated by one profession. Both developed a dysfunctional hierarchical culture that substantially increases risk for its customers and patients. Aviation did something about it with dramatic results meaning flying is now incredibly safe. This was following a very high profile airline accident in the 1970’s.
