Topic: spaces of social differences
Order Description
Name the suburb you live in and the comparison suburb you have selected.
Your comparison suburb MUST be located in a different region of Sydney to the region the
suburb you live is located in. For example, if you live in Penrith (in Outer Western Sydney),
you might choose to compare Penrith to Manly (in Northern Sydney). You cannot choose
Mount Druitt, which is another suburb located in Outer Western Sydney.
3. Identify the geographic regions of Sydney in which these two suburbs are located.
To identify the regions, use the Map of Spatial Terms to Identify Regions of Sydney located
in the Assignment 1 folder on vUWS.
If you live outside of the greater Sydney region, name the region of NSW your suburb is
located within. Ask your tutor for assistance if you are unsure.
Part II (4 marks)
4. Locate the ABS QuickStats Comparison Tables in the Assignment 1 Template (they are in the
Appendix) and fill in the data for the suburb you live in and your comparison suburb.
The step-by-step guide to downloading this data and completing these tables is included
before the tables in the Assignment 1 Template (page 5).
Note that we will cover the skills needed to complete these tables in the Week 3 workshop.
5. Describe four (4) of the main socio-economic differences between the suburb you live in and your
comparison suburb. To do this you will need to look carefully at the comparison tables you have
completed.
Part III (10 marks)
6. Use at least two (2) academic sources (i.e. journal articles, books chapters or books), and the
lectures from this unit, to explain some of the main reasons for the socio-economic differences you
have identified between your comparison suburbs in Part II.
The academic sources you use MUST come from the weekly readings for Module 1 (see
table below) OR the Assignment 1 reading list (see below). All of these readings can be
downloaded using the links provided in the ‘Readings and Resources’ link on vUWS
