As a nurse, I will personally apply this tenet by actively involving patients in their care, providing them with accurate and unbiased information, and supporting their choices, even if they differ from my own opinions. In practice, this tenet can be seen when a nurse discusses treatment options with a patient and ensures that the patient understands the risks, benefits, and alternatives. The nurse then respects the patient’s decision, whether it aligns with the nurse’s recommendation or not. For example, if a patient with a chronic illness decides to discontinue a certain medication due to personal beliefs, as a nurse, I will respect their autonomy and work with them to explore alternative options that align with their values. Upholding respect for autonomy is crucial in maximizing the quality of patient care because it acknowledges that patients are individuals with unique values, preferences, and goals. By involving patients in their care decisions, we empower them to actively participate in their own health management, which can lead to better treatment adherence and improved overall outcomes.
