A. Immigration stories are currently a “hot topic” in the U.S. and have had a long history in America as the “multitudes” have come to this country including many of our own ancestors. Chapter 3 discusses the history of families in America and the different ethnic and racial minorities in this country. They include the first peoples (indigenous American Indian/Alaskan peoples), other groups forced to come to this country through slavery, as well as many people whose ancestors came voluntarily to establish a new life including from those who currently form the dominant majority (white, Anglo-Saxon, protestants). These groups also have included refuges, undocumented, or people carrying green cards trying to find a better life. Most immigrants stayed, but some returned voluntarily to their home country. Based on the first 2-3 sections of this chapter, complete the following:

Define, reference, and use concepts and theories from the textbook to write a 1-2 page discussion/explanation of the similarities and/or differences you identify comparing the experiences and issues of immigration by different groups in our country today.

Answer any 4 of the following questions.

How similar are some immigrant’s stories of trying to get to this country?

What obstacles (both within their families and outside their families) have they dealt? What strengths have families brought to this country?

How do you explain the way groups are dealt with by American citizens to varying immigrant groups?

How do you think your ancestors would be dealt with today?

If you are from an indigenous group in the U.S. how do you think your group should or shouldn’t respond to immigrant groups today?

Should declining rural areas welcome or deter immigrant populations?

How do you think moving to another country effects families?

B. After reading section 3.6 in this chapter, pick one of the racial-ethnic groups discussed there which is different from your own race/ethnicity and answer the following in 2 pages:

        1. Describe the family structure and relationships of this group. How is it similar or different from your own family?
  1. What are some of the benefits and costs of maintaining one’s ethnic-racial identity instead of acculturating? How hard do you think it is to develop and maintain a bicultural identity? What might be some of the issues?
  2. Define and reference the concept historical trauma and discuss ways in which families overcome the trauma they likely have experienced. Do you know a family or has your family dealt with historical trauma and what strengths did they/you develop?
