Learning styles can be classified in four categories: visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. This model of the four categories is known as the VARK model (How to recognize and support learning styles in the classroom 2020).
Visual learners like to see the things they are learning about. Things like pictures and written directions work best for these type of students.
Auditory learners learn the most by listening and using sound in general to learn.
Reading/writing learners like using written words (How to recognize and support learning styles in the classroom 2020). This differs from the visual learner because these learners really enjoy reading and working their thoughts out by writing (How to recognize and support learning styles in the classroom 2020).
Kinesthetic learning involves learning by doing and experiencing what they are learning about. They like to use hands and act out things. (How to recognize and support learning styles in the classroom 2020).
It is important to know which learning styles are present in one's classroom in order to avoid creating static and ineffective lessons. The goal is to reach every student and not just the students that learn best with the way the teacher teaches best. Although it may drive teachers out of their comfort zone, creating more dynamic lessons can lead to better comprehension from their students.
Visual learners as well as reading/writing learners probably fit the best under "traditional" teaching methods. Assigning reading and written assignments and doing lectures on the boards work best for these learners.
Auditory learners will likely need to repeat information back to know that they have understood it. They will like open discussion in order to share what they learned and to hear what another have learned. (How to recognize and support learning styles in the classroom 2020).
Kinesthetic learners can be asked to act out certain things and be allowed to move around when trying to memorize something.
The internet is a great resource to figure out how to incorporate some of these more difficult learning styles in one's lesson. The most important thing to realize is that, we are most likely not the first to experience difficulty reaching all these learning styles.
